Test:
In a couple weeks you will be having the U.S. Map Test. (Date TBA)

How You’ll Learn:
Below are links for games you can play to start learning and practicing them.
I would normally give you a blank printed U.S. States Map, that you'd color and fill in with the states and capital names. I am working on an assignment equivalent to complete at home. But for now, you can start to learn the states and capitals.

Grade:
10 points for submitting a picture of your BEST score (time and percentage)
Practicing will only help you.

Submit:
Take a pic of you with your best time/percentage for the STATE NAMES. Submit to the assignment in Schoology. Play as much as you like to get faster and faster.

Score Board:
You can post your best time and percentage in the States & Capitals Contest - Discussion on Schoology.
But for it to count for the contest, you need to take a pic and submit it under the assignment (and for your grade).
I’ll start a discussion forum in MATERIALS just for this.

What to play:
*There are settings for your game at the bottom of the map. Use the PIN setting (default) for the contest.

Assignment

Presidential Campaign Speeches and Posters

This assignment is due IF and only IF the student(s) are choosing to run in the election.
This is a purely elective project for those desiring to run for Presidential office for our Government Simulation.

Anyone may run for President. All candidates must adhere to the following.

Must have to be a candidate in our class election for President:

1. Running mate (someone who runs with you as your Vice Presidential candidate)
2. Speech (1 min - laying out 3 ideas you have for our classroom/Nobel MS)
3. Poster (promoting your candidacy with your VP-should be nicely done, posters quickly slapped together last minute will not qualify)
4. May not slander (speak ill) of anyone (including other candidates)

Due:

Assignment

Bill Proposal Worksheet

Attached is the Bill Proposal Worksheet and the Bill Proposal Final Draft example.

They are attached in both Word (.docx) and PDF formats. If students simply open the Word version (if it works on their device/computer) they can simply change the words to their work so the formatting stays the same.

You'll think through any idea you have on how you'd like to change things in our classroom. You can come up with something fun, or crazy, or serious. You get to be creative.

For instance if you were going to write one about chewing gum:
Students at Nobel Charter Middle School in Room 79 during 6th period my chew gum. Students will supply the gum. Students may not make noise chewing the gum. Students may not put the gum anywhere but their mouth or the trash can........And you can go on and on with it.

This is kind of a boring example. I want you be creative. You can be as creative with your bill as you like. I purposely am not giving students examples of bills, because I want you to be creative and not copy them. Please don't use the gum bill example. I want to reward students for their creativity. Have fun with it.

If you'd like to propose an idea for Nobel (outside our classroom), whether it be the 8th graders, or the whole school, you will write your bill very carefully considering what other students, Admin, Teachers, and parents would say about this new idea. Two bills that become law from each period that affect the school outside our classroom will be chosen to be proposed/voiced as ideas to the Administration for feedback.

You will learn how a bill becomes a law in class. Then we'll be going through the process with your bills in class.

The LEFT side of the classroom (facing front) is the House of Representatives.

The RIGHT side of the classroom (facing front) is the Senate.

FRIENDLY REMINDER:

PLEASE REGISTER FOR THE PARENT PORTAL FOR ACCESS TO SCHOOLOGY

*If you are already registered on the "Parent Portal" for parental access to Schoology, I've already updated the points for this assignment as of 9/15/19, and there's no need to worry about this message (unless you need to reset your pin, see below).

**If you need to reset your Parent Portal password, the Attendance Office can give you your parent PIN number. Nobel Middle School phone: 818-773-4700.

If you are NOT ALREADY registered:

Nobel would like all parents registered and able to log into the Parent Portal Schoology program. Those students' parent(s) who are already registered, I have entered the points for this small parent communication assignment. If there are no points listed on Schoology for this assignment in your child's grade, please ask them about registering. I have shown them where to find the instructions. If you run into any hiccups along the way (the process is a bit cumbersome) the Attendance Office can get you in touch with someone to help you finish the registration process.

After you've registered:
When you've registered and logged in to see your child's grades, please have your child (or you) send me a message on Schoology (or email) to let me know you've successfully registered. This way I know to go double check on my end and can then enter the points into their Schoology account. Unfortunately the system doesn't send me a notification that you've completed the registration. Either way I'll check in again to see if anyone has registered next weekend. But if you're concerned about the points being entered, please just send me a message to notify me you've completed it.

Thank you for your support in this process. I look forward to a great year with great parent communication!

Announcement: How to make up/retake Reading Checks, Quizzes, Tests, or Assessments of any sort

1. Please sign up on the clipboard in the front of the classroom for a date that works for you. Please be sure of which assessment you're making up/retaking before you go to sign up. Students should have no missing work before retaking assessments.

2. Write yourself a pass using scratch paper from the corner of my desk requesting to come to our classroom, Room 79 during Advisory. Be sure to include the date you are requesting to go.Then, ask me to sign it when I have a moment.

3. Review on your own time for the assessment you're going to be making-up or retaking.

3. Show the pass to your Advisory teacher, and ask them for permission to go to our classroom on that date.

4. Show up to Room 79 on the date for which you signed up, and wait patiently in the chair next to the supplies table until I can help you. Be sure to know which assessment you're there to retake.

These instructions will be covered in class, and posted on the clipboard where you sign up.

This is system is not meant to be punitive. This is meant to give students the opportunity to make-up and or retake assessment without the need to miss our valuable History class time, nor miss Nutrition or Lunch breaks. It allows me to limit the number of students who come in during Advisory on a given day, know who's coming to take what, and respectfully communicate with other Advisory teachers. This system also helps students keep organized and plan ahead for make ups/redos.

Please ask Mrs. Richard for any clarification on this. Thank you for all your support!

Read: Chapter 1.5 - Enlightenment
Review: Key Terms and Review Questions 1-4
Reading Check: Tuesday, September 10

Students should read for understanding. This is a slightly longer than usual section, so reading in two sittings may be efficient.

Students should be familiar with the key terms (highlighted in the section) and use the Review Questions 1-4 as a review guide. I use the key terms and Review Questions to inform the Reading Check Questions, but it is very important to be sure they have read the section. Students do not need to be an expert in the subject matter of the assigned section. They need to have read it for understanding (rather than simply "skimming" it).

National Boards for Teaching Standards - Student Release Form (Signed by PARENT)

Dear Parent/Guardian:

I am a participant this school year in an assessment to certify teachers as accomplished practitioners in teaching. My participation in this assessment, which is being conducted by the National Board for Professional Teaching Standards (the National Board), is voluntary. The primary purposes of this assessment are to make decisions about whether a teacher demonstrates knowledge and practice expected of an accomplished teacher, improve student learning and encourage excellence in teaching.

This assessment requires that I submit short audiovisual recordings and/or photographs of lessons being taught inyour child’s class. Although the recordings/photographs will show or involve students, the primary focus is on myinstruction, not on the students. In the course of this assessment, your child’s image and voice may be recorded onthe video, and your child may be photographed, with the recordings/photographs then submitted to the National Board. My submissions (the Submissions) will also include my written commentary sheets, instructional materials, essays, classroom plans, assignments, and commentary.

In addition, as part of the assessment, I may be asked to submit samples of student work (the Student Work) to demonstrate my teaching practices, which could include some of your child’s work. No students’ last names will appear on any materials or in any recordings that I submit as part of my assessment.

The National Board has broad rights to use my Submissions, and I assign to the National Board all of my rights in and to those Submissions. The National Board also obtains certain rights with respect to the Student Work that I submit. The National Board may use my Submissions and the Student Work, in its discretion, to further its mission of promoting excellence in education and teaching. For instance, in addition to uses related to my assessment by the National Board and any third-parties who assist in the assessment process, the National Board may post the Submissions and Student Work in a password-protected online database where they can be accessed by others for educational, research, and professional development purposes, and it may use the Submissions and Student Work in National Board works and publications. The National Board may receive fees from those to whom it grants access to the Submissions and Student Work. These uses may make my Submissions and the Student Work available for viewing by a broad range of individuals, educators, and students. Again, however, your child’s last name would notbe disclosed in the Submissions or the Student Work.

I am writing to request your permission for me to disclose to the National Board recordings and photographs that may include your child’s voice or image, to be used and disclosed by the National Board only in accordance withthe terms of this letter and the enclosed Student Release Form. By providing permission, you will also be granting the National Board a perpetual, irrevocable and royalty-free license to use any Student Work by your child that I submit as part of my assessment, and to have and to use any copyright, rights of publicity, and other rights associated with any Student Work, and you will be releasing the National Board from all claims (including invasion of privacy) in connection with its use of the Submissions or Student Work.

If you agree to your child’s participation in the activities as outlined above and the National Board’s right to usethe Submissions and Student Work in the manner described in this letter, please sign the enclosed Student Release Form. I will retain this form documenting your permission and may provide it to the National Board uponrequest. If you do not consent to your child’s participation, your child will be out of view in making the recordingsand photographs, and I will not include your child’s work in the Student Work I submit. Thank you very much.
