FOCAL Centerpieces

(Friends of Children and Literature- Central Library)

Art students from Nobel were given the privilege to once again participate in the FOCAL award ceremony to honor this year’s recipient for the best Children’s book with California content. Friends of Children and Literature was founded in 1979 by teachers, librarians, parents, authors, and illustrators to support and enrich the programs and resources of the Children's Literature Department of the Central Library. This year’s winner is “Chasing Secrets” by Gennifer Choldenko. This is the eleventh year students have participated in the creation of the table art that recreates scenes from the book, and the third year for Nobel. A group of students from Mr. Moszkowicz’s art classes volunteered their time during countless lunches to create wonderful centerpieces for the tables at this year’s ceremony that will be held at the Millenium Biltmore Hotel on Saturday December 9th in downtown LA. Four of our students will attend this wonderful event and their hard work and dedication will be celebrated. They will be treated to a wonderful lunch, have the opportunity to meet the author, and will be provided a copy of the book that Ms. Choldenko will sign. In addition, students will have the opportunity to tour the Children’s Literature department at the Central Library. One of the centerpieces every year is given to the author, with another becoming a part of the Central Libraries permanent collection. It will be showcased until next year’s FOCAL luncheon, and is on display in the children’s literature department alongside the book and a handmade puppet of the main character. I am proud of the hard work and dedication of all the students who participated in this year’s FOCAL group.
