Short Constructed Response

Using the notes from the reading of Olaudah Equiano's autobiography, students were guided through a three-step process for writing a short constructed response:

(1) RESTATE the question and answer it . . . this becomes the topic sentence
(2) PROVIDE evidence or examples (may be from the text, personal experience, or real world, depending on the question) . . . this may be referred to as concrete details
(3) EXPLAIN the connection and/or importance to the topic sentence (think about why is this important or why this matters) . . . this is the analysis of the evidence in context to the topic and may be referred to as commentary. [NOTE: This requires students to add something new to the "conversation" about the topic and involves critical thinking, which may be challenging.]

Students are considering what they knew about 17th-century Africa before the reading and comparing it to what was in the reading about life in Africa. Students were provided an example of the writing process with a response rough draft written at the start of class.
