Principal's Message
Principal's Message
I am Derek Horowitz, and I'm honored to be the Principal of this great school. The reputation of Nobel Charter is known district-wide and I will help ensure that Nobel Charter keeps its stature as the number one middle school in the LAUSD. We encourage your attendance and participation in our Charter Council, School Site Council, English Learner Advisory Council, and our PTSA. Please see our monthly Nobel Charter News for dates, times and locations of these monthly meetings. Our PTSA is the best in the city and we encourage you to become a member through our upcoming PTSA membership drive. You will learn of other opportunities to become involved with Nobel Charter throughout the year.
Alfred B. Nobel Charter Middle School is delighted to be recognized as a California Distinguished School and is the top performing middle school in the Los Angeles Unified School District! Nobel Charter has the greatest amount of students performing at the Standard Met and/or Standard Exceeded level for each and every core subject assessed in the LAUSD - Math #1, English #1, Science #1. Nobel contains a Mathematics, Science, Technology Magnet Center along with a School for Advanced Studies. We are proud of the fact that our students want to attend Nobel Charter and as a result, Nobel Charter has the highest attendance rates of any middle school in LAUSD.
Nobel's mission is to help each student realize his/her potential in all curricular areas in a safe environment that promotes nurturing and mutual respect. Nobel's vision is to develop lifelong learners who have the literacy, thinking, processing, and communication skills required to adapt their knowledge to an ever-changing world and to be responsible, productive members of a local and global community.
Middle school is a transition between elementary school and high school. We realize that the transition between elementary and middle school can be challenging for some students. We strive to make this transition stress free for our incoming 6th graders. When 6th graders arrive at Nobel Charter, all academic classes are located in a separate section of the campus with separate restrooms. The 6th graders have two academic teachers compared to the 7th and 8th graders four academic teachers. Nobel works to prepare all of our students academically and emotionally to meet the challenge of high school and beyond. Our students are challenged academically in the core disciplines of English, Mathematics, Science, and History. In addition, Nobel Charter offers several academic electives such as Marine Science, Forensic Science, and Astronomy. We also offer a wide range of elective classes such as Art, Ceramics, Drawing, Crafts, Spanish, Horticulture, Drama, Band, Orchestra, Leadership, Peer Counseling, Computer Science, Yearbook, Drill Team, and Music Appreciation. Sixth graders experience an exploratory wheel of four classes, including Communication Skills, Keyboarding, Art, Marine Science, Hands on Science, and Drama or a yearlong course in Beginning Winds/Strings.
Nobel Charter recognizes student achievement in a variety of ways. Each semester we have scholarship recognition for Medalist's Society (3.5 GPA) and Principal's Honor Roll (4.0 GPA). We have reward programs that recognize perfect attendance and citizenship with assemblies such as a teacher talent show. The Homework Incentive Program rewards students for their efforts in completing projects and assignments. Eighth graders have a special awards night during which departments honor top scholars in academics, service, and citizenship. As a top performing school on the California Fitness Program, Nobel Charter recognizes students for their accomplishments in physical fitness.
Nobel Charter Middle School offers numerous extracurricular activities for student involvement outside of the classroom, for example, noon sports competitions between Homerooms under the supervision of our P.E. faculty. In addition, Nobel's Leadership Class and 8th grade officers plan at least 2-3 activities a month for the student body including dances, sports activities, and lawn days. Monday through Thursday at lunch and after school on Monday and Wednesday, students have the opportunity to participate in both peer and adult tutoring and become involved in numerous club activities. Our Beyond the Bell Program offers supervised playground activities from the end of school till 6:00 p.m.
Nobel Charter is extremely proud of our parent participation. Nobel Charter has an award winning PTSA that supports the school with volunteers and fund raising to make possible a wide variety of activities, including field trips, classroom aides, and department funds. We offer many opportunities for parents to become involved at school: Charter Council, Magnet Advisory Committee, SAS/GATE meetings, School Site Council, English Language Learner Council, Parent Involvement Committee, and PTSA. Parents are always welcome and appreciated at Nobel Charter.
Alfred B. Nobel Charter Middle School is successful due to our students, parents, and staff working together as a team - "The Nobel Family." Nobel is truly a great place to be. "Can't Hide Our Nobel Charter Pride!”
