Pledge / Homeroom

Course Description

Family/Home Groups
Pledge is a means to send information between families/home groups and school. In order to document that adults have seen the information, students are to return ALL flyers signed (or initialed) by parents. These flyers will be returned immediately to students to return home for adults to file as they choose. Adults may email (or message through Engrade) that they have seen the paperwork instead of sending it back with their students to Pledge.

Social-Emotional Development
During the middle-school years, young people are in transition from childhood to adolescence, and this can have an effect on their behavior. This phase is marked by emotional and physical growth. The onset of puberty may also make some teens unpredictable or moody and can cause them to feel out of control of their changing bodies. You can help your teen navigate through these years by taking the time to listen to his concerns and providing guidance and encouragement. Keep in mind that every adolescent develops at a different rate, leading to different social and emotional behaviors. If you have concerns about your adolescent’s development, please contact his teacher or school counselor, or your healthcare provider.

Recommended Reading List

In preparation for high school, this is a compilation of recommended books to read. Some high schools post summer reading lists based on incoming grade levels. Be sure to check with your high school and see if that is available!

Bottom line:  read!

Challenge yourself to read out of your comfort zone:  recommendations from librarians and other adults rather than reading Diary of a Wimpy Kid or Captain Underpants (funny, yes ... but not grade level reading for late middle school or high school). Your ability to successfully engage in complex texts will make high school easy! :)

Note the end of this list suggests you wait to read titles that may be required reading in high school. I disagree. There is much to be gained from reading a book more than once!
