ALEKS (Free trial available)

Assessment and LEarning in Knowledge Spaces is a Web-based, artificially intelligent assessment and learning system. ALEKS uses adaptive questioning to quickly and accurately determine exactly what a student knows and doesn't know in a course. ALEKS then instructs the student on the topics she is most ready to learn. As a student works through a course, ALEKS periodically reassesses the student to ensure that topics learned are also retained. ALEKS courses are very complete in their topic coverage and ALEKS avoids multiple-choice questions. A student who shows a high level of mastery of an ALEKS course will be successful in the actual course she is taking.

Webmath is a math-help web site that generates answers to specific math questions and problems, as entered by a user, at any particular moment. The math answers are generated and displayed real-time, at the moment a web user types in their math problem and clicks "solve." Shmoop is a digital publishing company with "a point of view." We seek to empower and broaden the range and depth of choices students have in life. Our teaching method revolves around the basic notion that learning is often too hard, so we carry gallons of academic WD-40 that we squirt on the tracks whenever we can.

Time Management

Cold Turkey

Are you distracted by your phone or computer? With Cold Turkey, a free app for your computer, you can block selected sites for an extended period of time, from 15 minutes to 24 hours. This program is something you set to block you from the temptations of having your mind and eyes wander to something else. The best part is there is no way to turn the timer off until it runs out, so you can’t cheat!
